NFC Tag Encoding

NFC tag encoding is the process of configuring a blank NFC tag with project-specific information by modifying the NFC chip. NFC tags comes from the manufacturer in a blank state as defined by the technical specification for that NFC chip type. To encode an NFC tag, specialized software and hardware are required. NFC tags can be encoded by GoToTags as a service when buying NFC tags or can be encoded later by the customer.

NFC Tag Encoding Steps

In general the process of encoding an NFC tag consists of these steps:

  1. Collect and prepare the data to be encoded to the NFC tag; often in an NFC tags encoding file
  2. Knowing or determining the specific NFC chip type to be encoded
  3. Formatting the NFC chip; often with NDEF
  4. Writing data to the user memory of the NFC chip
  5. Configuring any special features of the NFC chip (locking…)
  6. Reading the NFC chip UID and other chip information (signature…)
  7. Saving the encoded NFC tag data for later use; often in an encoded NFC tags file
