UHF RFID Chip

A UHF RFID chip is the integrated circuit component in an UHF RFID tag that performs UHF RFID operations. UHF RFID chips do not work by themselves, they must be attached to an antenna to form an UHF RFID tag. There are several different UHF RFID chip types available, each with its own features, performance, cost and availability.

General UHF RFID Chip Specifications

Most UHF RFID chip types share a common set of specifications; the specific values do vary by chip, but this gives a general range.

  • TID: Manufacturer supplied read-only tag identifier that can be serialized with a unique identifier
  • EPC: Memory to store an Electronic Product Code; A universal identifier for physical objects
  • User Memory: Memory to store user data
  • Data Retention: > 10 years; how long the chip will retain the state of it’s memory
  • Write Cycles: > 10,000; The number of times you can write to the UHF RFID chip
  • Reading Distance: > 1m up to 16m
  • Operating Frequency: 860 ~ 960 MHz (UHF RFID)
  • Power: Passive (no battery); Power is provided from the UHF RFID device that is interacting with the UHF RFID tag; Active (battery); Power is provided from the UHF RFID device and from the UHF RFID tag
  • Operating Temperature: -40 C to 85 C; this is just for the chip, the surrounding UHF RFID tag will have a different temperature range
